Cougars Compete Hard in Winter Classic
Ventura Mariners 4, Cougars 0
December 30
The Cougars PeeWee B team starts out their Winter Classic Tournament in a game against the Ventura
Mariners, coming from southern California. They started out strong, but they couldn't match
the eagerness of the hungry Ventura team. The goalies from both teams played a great game,
making many spectacular saves. By the third period, they fell short to the Mariners in a
4-0 loss. Though this wasn't the start to the tournament that the team would have hoped for,
the Cougars remained full of determination for their next games.
Cougars 1, Oakland Bears 1
December 30
The Cougars PeeWee B, in their second game in the Winter Classic tournament, played against the Oakland
Bears. The Cougars played an aggressive game, and took the lead in the second period. The
Cougars had many chancese but couldn't capitalize and they score remained 1-0 until late in the third
period, but a turnover gave the Bears an opportunity to score and tie up the game with a little more
than three minutes remaining. The Cougars undoubtedly played a good game, but did not completely
reach their full potential.
Cougars 2, San Jose Jr. Sharks 2
December 31
The Cougars PeeWee B woke up early, and trudged on with their hockey bags to Logitech, for Game 3 of the
Winter Classic Tournament against the San Jose Jr. Sharks. The Cougars have had their ups and downs
against this team, constantly alternating results. The Cougars played good defense and fended off
many scoring chances of the Sharks, while taking advantages of their own opportunities and held a 2-1 lead
until midway through the 3rd period. There were times where the Sharks had more momentum offensively,
but the Cougars responded with superb goaltending, strong defensive plays, and a couple of good shots of
their own; the game ended with a final score of 2-2.
Cougars 6, Capital Thunder 2
January 1
The fourth game of the tournament was against Capital Thunder. This was by far the best game for the
Cougars, ending in a 6-2 victory. The Cougars worked extremely well as a team, with goals coming from
five different players, and points from seven. The Cougars played a great 2nd period, scoring three
of their six goals. The goaltending in this match, as for the whole tournament, remains solid.
The third period caused a few troubles, as the Cougars received three penalties; they were able to shake it
off and add another two goals to the scoresheet. By winning the game against Capital Thunder, the
Cougars PeeWee B secured the fourth spot, and will be playing in the Winter Classic Semi-Finals against the
San Jose Jr. Sharks. (Also, the Cougars received a treat when they saw John McCarthy, Joe Pavelski,
and Torrey Mitchell of the San Jose Sharks practice in the same rink before their game.)
Semi-Finals: San Jose Jr. Sharks 5, Cougars 2
January 2
The Cougars PeeWee B played in the Semi-Finals for the Winter Classic tournament against their longtime
rivals, the San Jose Jr. Sharks. The Cougars had a slow start, and dug themselves a big hole, falling
behind 3-0 in the first. After the first period, the Cougars regained their composition and played a
strong game for the remaining two periods. In the third period, the Cougars scored two quick goals,
making the score 3-2. The Cougars certainly changed the tide and had the momentum until some questionable
calls against the Cougars, leading to powerplay after powerplay for the Sharks. The Cougars managed to
kill off a 5-on-3 but the Sharks scored just after the players got out of the box to make it 4-2, and then gave
up an empty-netter for a heartbroken 5-2 loss.
