Cougars Mites bring a trophy home

March 4-5, 2006
This weekend the Mite season ended with a Mite Jamboree in Fresno.  All six Mite teams (the SJ Jr. Sharks Girls 10-u are not eligible for the ‘playoffs’) played three games each and participated in the Skills competition.  The players, coaches and families made their way to Fresno on Friday evening.

Cougars lose to Tri Valley in a weak 2nd period

Cougars tie the second game with Fresno Falcons.

The Skills Competition:

The Cougars Mites did really well in the Skills Competition.  Every Cougars player participated in one or more of the following categories:  Chariot Race, Stalled Wagon, Shooting Gallery, Hardest Shot, Obstacle Course, Breakaway and Human Cannonball.  As a team we became on the third place and this event was a lot of fun for the players and for the spectators.

The results of the Skills Competition did not change our seed: we went to the final games on Sunday on seed 6 and were scheduled to play 8:15 AM against Fresno.

Cougars beat Falcons 5:2

In this final game our team played very well and was able to keep the lead that we gained late in the first period.

Before the game started there was some confusion about which jerseys we should wear.  First we had the home jerseys on, and then we changed to the away ones and lined up to wait to skate to the bench.  When we saw the Fresno team dressed in their dark jerseys, we were called one more time to change to our white home jerseys  A little delay and panic was caused but finally the players of both teams were ready to listen to the National Anthem.

The fans of the Cougars were relieved when the first minute of the game was played and the Falcons had not scored:  actually they did not even get close to our zone:  that is how well our defense was playing.  As in the earlier games, again we enjoyed listening to the announcer (a grandpa of a Fresno player).  When 4:45 was left of the first period, to our delight the announcer said:  “He shoots, he scores.  The Cougars goal was brought to you by # 8 Garan Magnes, and assisted by # 10 Will Baginski”.  But before the announcer had finished saying that, Justin scored our second goal unassisted 2:0.  The fans of the Cougars were able to relax a little.

Before the first period ended we scored two more goals:  3rd one by Justin from a great pass by Tristan and the 4th of Justin, unassisted.  This was Justin’s second hat trick of the weekend!  Somewhere in the middle, Fresno got one goal.

In the second period we were hungry to score more goals and everyone went after the puck.  There were so many great performances by every player and by the whole Cougars team.  The Falcons narrowed our lead by scoring their second goal 4:2, but this time we did not give up.  The winner of this game was going to take a huge trophy home and our team wanted it badly.  In the end of the second period Will scored our fifth goal assisted by Tristan.

In the final stanza, we almost scored one more goal, but as the announcer put it:  "the puck was frozen" – no goal.  Fresno tried hard and kept shooting and attacking.  Once they almost got the puck in, but it bounced back and – no goal.  The final score in this entertaining and exciting game was 5:2.  The shots were 16 against us and 14 against Fresno.  We won and the way the Cougars Mite team was celebrating, you would have thought that we got the first place!

But we won this game and we played very well as a team and that was all that mattered.  The players got their individual trophies and a big one for the team.

In the locker room Coach Jeff announced the players of the game and they were:  Will, Kurt, Tyler, Tristan, Vanny, Spencer, Justin, Sebastian, Kaz, Dustin, Garan, Steven and Felix.

Congratulations to the team.  We are very proud of you!

Thank you Coach Jeff, Coach Sheldon, Coach Taku and Goalie Coach Mark!

The hosting Fresno Falcons did a great job with all arrangements.
