Season Wraps Up in Vacaville

The Cougars Squirt A2 played at Vacaville on the last day of the regular season, with a chance to play spoiler once again.  Having tied Santa Rosa during the previous weekend and taken them out of fourth place, the Cougars could knock Vacaville out of the Norcal playoffs with a victory.  Alas, it wasn't to be, as Vacaville prevailed 2-0 in a closely fought contest and earned the final spot in the Norcal playoffs.

There were not many scoring chances, and both goalies were sharp whenever the teams managed to sustain any offense.  The Cougars had several power play chances but failed to get anything past the Vacaville goalie.  The Jets scored a power play goal late in the second, on an odd bounce from the end boards that caromed to the front of the net and was put home by a wide open forward in the middle of the defensive "box".  Vacaville added another late in the third period, scoring on a deflected shot from close range after a failed Cougars clearing attempt.  In all, a fine effort but somewhat emblematic of the season - close, but just not enough firepower to break through.
