Cougars 12 Sabercats 2 Cougars get back on the winning track and beat the
San Francisco Sabercats. Up Next is Capital Thunder this Saturday at
Vallco
Saturday presented the opportunity for our team to get back to some basic
skills with some much needed passing practice and unselfish play. Throughout
the game the Cougars looked for the open man and tried to spread the wealth
of scoring to everyone, exemplified by Sebastian’s unselfish play. It also
gave the team the chance to play different positions when the game was under
control. Our defensive units of Sebastian, Tristan, Ryan and Paul, along
with Kyle at goalie, played shut out D in the first two periods. They kept
the puck out of our end and in the Sabercats D-Zone 80% of the time, while
stopping any Sabercats power plays throughout the game. Kyle stopped 12 of
14 shots on the day with several nice glove saves on some difficult shots.
Our offense combined for 55 shots for the game. Jackson started things off
in the early part of the first period with a nice pass to Justin who shot on
net allowing Aaron to put in the rebound for the first goal of the game.
Tristan was next with a good pass to Jack who scored when the goalie got
caught cheating up to deflect the puck, but decided to retreat too late,
Cougars 2 - SF 0. The final goal of the period went through the goalie from
a loose puck before the blue line, Cougars 3 – SF 0. The Cougars put the
game out of reach in the second period after the Sabercats scored early on,
making it a 3-1 game. Vinny stole the puck and passed it to Justin to start
the scoring, Cougars 4 – SF 1. Then Justin made a nice pass to John in front
of the net, kicking the puck to his stick and knocking it in for a goal.
Jackson fought hard in front of a crowded net to get the next goal, Cougars
6-1. Next, Justin took the face-off, while being short handed, and went all
the way to score, Cougars 7-1. Vinny then went coast to coast on a break
away to score a goal after receiving a nice outlet pass from his defense. To
end the second period scoring, Kurt shot the puck off the far post and
Sebastian was right there to put in the rebound, Cougars 9 - SF 1. Again,
San Francisco scored in the beginning of the third period to make it a 9-2
game. Paul then made a nice move across the goal to score and Aaron took a
steal at the blue line all the way for a goal. Justin closed out the scoring
by passing it to Vinny who went top shelf, Cougars 12 – SF 2.
