The division-leading Santa Rosa
Flyers decisively ended the California Cougars’ 4-game unbeaten
streak by erupting for 6 second-period goals on the way to an 11-1
victory at Snoopy Ice in Santa Rosa on a rainy Sunday, Nov. 20.
Nash Berkowitz recorded the
lone goal, a second-period score that extended his point streak to 6
games as the Cougars fell to 2-2-2 on the season.
Santa Rosa built a 3-0 lead in the first period, and ran it to 4-0
before John Bohac and Pace Farbstein put shots on net
that resulted in a scramble in the crease, and Berkowitz was Johnny-on-the-spot
during the power play as he rammed home the rebound for his 5th goal
of the season.
The score could have been worse had defender Chase Bolling not cleared the
area in front of the goalie with a game-high 7 hits that would make
San Jose Sharks’ defender Douglas Murray proud. Shura Boz also dished out 3
checks. Tom Beebe fought
for the puck on defense along with Kyle
Tanaka, but that didn’t ground the unbeaten high-flying
Flyers, who scored 4 more times in the middle frame. Goalie Carson Murison was tested early
and often, making 27 saves in the first half before being relieved
by agile netminder Nick Gary,
who stopped 17 more shots.
A controversial hitting-in-the-back penalty early in the game
hamstrung Coach Rob Tenore and Assistant Coaches Christian DeJesus and Devin Ernst, who scrambled to
create new lines on the fly. And with Max Frenkel still on the Injured Reserve list (an
injury NOT sustained on the ice, for all our casual readers), Ryan Bockholt and Elliot Salazar took extra shifts
on the blueline.
The Flyers controlled the action despite the best efforts of
forwards Matthew Lydon and
Daniel Schmidt. Adam Rosenduft and Erik West each got off a couple
of shots on goal, but were turned aside by the swift Flyers defense.
Coach Tenore shared that
this was a learning experience, and that the Cougars have to focus
on playing the system. More contact – both dishing out hits and
getting in lanes – will be vital in reversing the shots-against
disadvantage of recent games.
Game notes: The Cougars did win in a couple of statistical
categories: The team killed 4 penalties and went 1-2 on the power
play. The Cougars were outshot 21-3 in the first period and 55-17
overall. With his assist, Farbstein
ran his point-scoring streak to 5 games. Berkowitz went 10-10 in faceoffs, and Rosenduft won 5 draws.
