California Cougars 4, Fresno Flyers 6

March 11

The boys were up for an early morning game in Fresno. The game opened with a quick goal for the Falcons in the opening minute of play. They scored a second time with 6 minutes left in the first period. The Cougars responded with a pair of goals, the first late in the first period was a great line effort with Tyler getting the goal with assists from Joey (or Alex - the scoresheet isn't clear if it was number 7 or 77) and Thomas. The first period ended with Falcons up 2-1. The second goal by the Cougars was an unassisted effort by Conner that bounced off the inside leg pad of the goalie and in. The Falcons responded with a goal 30 seconds later to keep them up by one. Garan scored an equalizer unassisted with 9 and a half minutes left in the second on a splendid hard high shot, and the Falcons responded again with 2 more goals in the next 3 minutes. Garan got another unassisted goal in the second, to end that period with the Falcons up again by one, 5-4. Cougars were scoreless in the third and the Falcons got an insurance goal to close out the game at 6-4.

The play started with a familiar theme with the Falcons playing a physical game and the Cougars starting out slowly. Like prior games, the team came back and played the team even throughout the rest of the game. This was a very physical game, and the Cougars responded to the pace. There were plenty of opportunities on both ends, and the score could have been much higher. Very few penalties were called.

Esau was back in the fold this week. He started by playing defense for the first 2+ periods, giving the defense the first 2 line game since Kern was lost and Brendan K left. In the third period, Esau moved up to wing and the team went back to 3 D. As always, it was a great team effort and the parents and coaches there were proud of the efforts of each player.

David was the starting goalie and took 12 shots on goal, Jacob played the second half and took 14 shots on goal.
