Santa Clara Blackhawks 3, California Cougars 1

March 12, 2005

The Cougars were host to the Santa Clara Blackhawks this weekend at Vallco.  Both teams were looking for wins for different reasons.  The Cougars were looking to secure a playoff spot in NORCAL while the Blackhawks were looking to widen their first place lead in the Pee Wee A division.

The first period was plagued with penalties and very little scoring.  Santa Clara was first to score @ 12:57 but the Cougars quickly responded on a Patrick Gillis goal assisted by Chris Benoit.  The Cougars committed four penalties with two minutes and were forced to step it up defensively.  The Cougars did just that shutting down the Blackhawks offense for the rest of the period.  Chris Blanton turned in an awesome performance delivering several crushing checks.

The Cougars came out sluggish in the second period managing only two shots on goal the entire period.  Santa Clara came out on fire taking all of 43 seconds to score their second goal of the game.  The Blackhawks would score again on a power play @ 7:12.  Blackhawks up 3-1.

Santa Clara kept the Cougars on their heels in the third period with 14 shots on goal.  Connor Lung provided his best performance of the season stopping all 14 shots.

Kudos to Justin Blythe, Neilsen Ramos and Alex Mayorkis for their outstanding hustle.
