Reflections on the end of the season

All the players have made incredible progress since the beginning of the year.  Tyler has made the most gains, showing great improvement in his skating speed as well as his stickhandling.  Kai has become the goaltending wonder.  I talked to one of the parents of the Bulldogs and they thought Kai was a 16-year-old playing on our Mite team.  Brendan has improved his skating as well and shows better hockey sense with respect to positioning.  Gregory now plays as big as Conner on D.  Steven has improved in his goaltending and attacking the puck.  Esau's skating has improved tremendously being able to skate backward crossovers.  Madison moves the puck with confidence and does not shy away from scraping with the boys for the puck.  Trevor puts the puck in the right place with ease and is more assertive.  Alexander is one of the few kids who always has been a great all-around player, passing, skating, an stopping attacks.  Justin has the long sought after "Hockey Gene" (probably from being a Hull) and has matured tremendously.  Conner has grown from the gentle giant to the aggressive and powerful Defender/Attacker.  Austin now can take the puck from a face off to a score in about 6 seconds.  DJ has a great outside shot and his skating speed has improved steadily.  Guy has gained enormous confidence in stick handling and can deke players with ease.

The following team members will be moving up to Squirt:  Austin, DJ, Trevor, Brendan, Gregory, and Conner.  We will miss you guys.

Feb 18-21 (Santa Rosa Tournament)
The Cougars made it to the Championship finals.  It was an exciting game against the Berkeley Bulldogs.  Kai made some incredible saves.  Joseph is steadily improving and made his first score in the game against Reno.  Conner showed everyone that he was big and fast transitioning from offense to defense.  DJ played with a lot of spirit and never gave up.  Austin was the scoring machine.  Gregory did a great job of keeping attacking players to the outside.  Gregory got his first score of the season in the game against Reno.  Tyler is showing great improvement in his skating speed and stick handling.  Tyler is probably the most improved player on the team.  Stephen got his first score in the game against Reno off a shot from close to the blue line.  Justin is doing a good job of getting into position and attacking the puck.  Guy showed a lot of skill by playing great defense and scoring when given the opportunity.  Madison is a true playmaker passing the puck when someone had a better shot and taking the shot when the opportunity presented itself.  Esau is learning to pass and shoot getting his first score in the game against Reno.  Brendon, Alexander, and Trevor we missed you guys.

Feb 12
Let the good times roll.  We got another win.  The kids are really improving and it shows in the way the kids are attacking the puck and passing.  Hard work, great coaching, and dedication are starting to pay off.

Another win!  It shows what good can happen when you play as a team.  Kai made some incredible saves and is playing intense and focused.  Joseph was playing in his first game today and I couldn't think of a better group of teammates for him to play with.  Steven easily had his best game getting a breakaway and almost scoring.  Conner was the fastest skater on the ice and got the game winner.  Trevor played steady defense and was a true team leader.  DJ played aggressive and was a serious scoring threat all morning.  Justin was awesome scoring on a breakaway.  Did you all see that move he made on the goalie?  Madison played her usual awesome game, real steady on D.  At offense or defense, she always plays her hardest.  Brendan improves every week and had his best game to date.  Austin has some real wheels and is one of the best players in the whole league.  He is so fun to watch.  Tyler too played his best game thus far.  SF could not clear the zone when Tyler played D.  He took charge.  Greg started to carry the puck and was a steadying force at forward.  Greg too gets better every week.  Sean fit right in with us and created many scoring opportunities.  What a great kid!  Wish we could have him full time.  Guy played outstanding and fits with Alexander at offense and defense.  Guy has truly emerged as one of the best players in the league.  Alexander plays flawless and sees the ice better than any one.  Positioned with Guy, the duo is unstoppable.

Dec 19
The Cougars finally did it.  After struggling through the season the Cougars finally beat a formidable opponent.  This was an incredible game with the Cougars up by 3-0, then 4-2, then, 4-4, 5-5, and finally 6-5.  We were missing our strongest players, Conner and Stephen.  Our goalie Kai was sick and played through the game even after up chucking in the third period.  Maybe it was the fire truck.  Maybe it was the SmartHockey training ball gifts.  Maybe it was Teresa's good luck coins.  Whatever it was, the kids got to the next level.  DJ had 4 scores, with a beautiful lifted shot.  Austin made the next 2 scores.  Kai played with a lot of heart.  Alexander played his usual exceptional hockey and almost took the puck up to make a score.  Guy stopped many attacks by the opposing team.  Gregory stepped up to the plate and took over Conner's role of big man on D.  Brendan challenged the other players for the puck and made some great passes.  Tyler is understanding the game better.  Tyler made smart plays by keeping the puck within the blue line.  This was probably Tyler's best game.  Madison was always in the right scoring location.  It too bad that no one passed the puck to her.  Trevor played defense actively and agitated the opponents offense.  Justin skated hard through out the whole game.  At six, Justin is showing a lot of promise.  Esau played well attacking the puck and getting back on D when we didn't have the puck.  This was probably Esau's best game so far.

Nov 26,27,28
Maybe it was the magic of Disney but our losing streak finally ended with a tie against Disney Ice Mites.  It was a lot of fun playing hockey and then visiting Disneyland.  Everybody is improving and the hard work of the coaches and team members is starting to pay off.

Nov 7
There was strong effort by everyone.  Kai got player of the game for making a lot of amazing saves.  Alexander, Guy, and DJ got the player puck awards for smart play and outstanding D.  DJ scored both scores of the game.  Justin showed great skating and stick handling skills.  Gregory made some important stops and cleared the puck effectively.  Tyler has some close breakaways.  Stephen played stong up front.  Brendan kept onside and made some good plays up front.  Trevor had some good breakaways and skated hard.  Austin made good scoring opportunities.  Madison played aggressive and was in the right place on the ice.  Conner was the "Intimidator" at D, showing he could play great defense as well as great offense.  Esau played strong up front and showed no fear.  Remember that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to the team that endures.

October 31
Mites coaches are working hard with the little guys teaching them positions and winning the puck.  Although the scores look a bit lopsided, there is improvement in every game we play.  As always, the team showed a lot of heart.  The never got down on themselves or their teammates, and despite the score they never gave up.  The players are starting to come together and play as a team, which is only going to make us better.  The 3 forward lines and the 2 D sets played very well.  The 1st line of Trevor, Connor, and Austin, really started to play up to their potential and started to show what they are capable of.  The 2nd and 3rd lines played very strong defensively and took away a lot of scoring chances by good positioning and smart playing.  The Mites thanked their Head Coach Don by presenting him with a Cougars peat coat to keep warm while coaching at the games.  Thanks Don, Mark, and David for great coaching.

October 17
Despite the fact that Berkeley Bulldogs bulldozed our Cougars Mites by 17-2, the kids are not giving up.  With an assist from Conner, Austin was able to put 2 goals into their net.  Alexander played an outstanding game as defenseman with GregTyler also got his first assist of the season.  Once the game was over, it was pizza party again....Mites enjoyed pizza with the team and had fun playing games where everyone went home with some nice prizes.

October 10
Everyone played well, and no one gave up. I'm proud of all of you for that, you kept trying, and we did have some really good chances.  Austin with his work ethic, always digging and going for the puck.  Trevor was really hustling and making things happen both offensively and defensively.  Greg, Brendan, and Esau made some good defensive plays.  Justin and Tyler were working all the time, and DJ with a great effort, and a couple of nice (non) checks.  Kai, came in and did a great job in the 2nd, and Steven was awsome in the 3rd, stopping several breakaways. Alexander played a great game at defense, shutting down a few goals that I saw by just smart play and positioning.  Madison was a forward, but was backchecking great, and broke up some of Tri-Valley's rushes and really helped out defensively.  Connor played the best game I've seen him play yet.  Not only did he do a lot in the way of offensive rushes and breakaways, but also did an outstanding job backchecking and helping the D.

October 3
The team keeps on improving.  We came close to getting the same score as the SC Blackhawks.  Alexander got player of the game for his excellent hockey sense.  Austin got 2 points with Trevor assisting on both points.  Conner made some great plays and showed his strength.  Kai had 58 shots on him and made 35 saves.  Brendan made some great defensive moves and kept a few goals away from our net.  We got off 12 shots against the San Jose Jr. Sharks. Everybody gave it their all and should be proud.

September 26
The team fought hard and played strong from start to finish.  Guy got the player of the game award for his spirit and persistence.  Trevor and Conner scored the two points of the game.  Kai did an awesome job at Goalie.  Everyone showed great spirit and courage.  All of us are proud of the Cougars.

September 19
It was a great to see the team improving.  Austin got the player of the game award for his 2 points.  DJ, Justin, and Guy scored the rest of the points.  Everybody did a great job.

September 18
The game against the Blackhawks was a good learning experience.  Justin got the player of the game award for getting the pivotal score of the game.  Special thanks to Don for treating the team to pizza.  Additional thanks to Mark, Don, and David for being great coaches.
