1/11/04 - On the road again, this time Cougars beat the SF Sabercats 5-3
Another day, another game. After a few hours of rest, the Cougars were back
on the ice against the San Francisco Sabercats.
Period 1
The game started with a lot of physical play; with no one team dominating
through the first part of the period. Just like in Oakland, #77 Rickey Niday
put the Cougars on the board. The Cougars got several more good scoring chances
from #7 Max DeLance and #81 Zefan Hurley. SF didn't register a shot on net
the whole period. Period ended: 1-0.
Period 2
The second period was riddled with penalties on both sides. #30 Chris Meyers
came up with some brilliant saves to keep the Sabercats off the board, temporarily.
Unfortunately, the Sabercats were able to score at the end of a power play
to tie the game at one apiece. Then to make matters worse, the Sabercats
scored a short-handed goal to take the lead. Fatigue was definitely setting
in, as the Cougars struggled to take back control of the game. Period ended:
2-1.
Period 3
We don't know what was said to the team during the intermission, but they
picked up the pace. Cougars goal by #9 Jeff Adams tied the game early in
the period. #25 Alan Reese (yes, another goal) was a beauty of a slap shot
past the SF goalie, all set-up by some great defensive play by #10 Alan Nguyen
at the blue-line. The line combination of #9 Jeff Adams, #2 Kevin Heyl,
and #4 Chase Johnson kept the SF goalie very busy. #77 Rickey Niday scored
is second of the day, to put the Cougars up by two. The Cougars took some
unnecessary penalties late in the third, which allowed SF to score on the
power play. SF took a chance and pulled their goalie with several minutes
left in the game. #4 Chase Johnson was able to take advantage of the open
net, to clinch the game with a 5-3 victory.
Summary:
Once again a great team effort, both offensively and defensively. Go Cougars.
