1/10/04 - A nail-biter to the end, as the Cougars beat the Tri-Valley Blue
Devils 3-2
Saturday night, in Oakland
not a pretty sight, however, the Cougars
had something to prove, as the last meeting between these two teams resulted
in a 4-2 loss.
Period 1
The Cougars were physical and aggressive with several scoring chances coming
from every line. #77 Rickey Niday got the Cougars on the score board late
in the first period. Tri-Valley found themselves in penalty trouble, but the
Cougars were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. The Cougars out-played
the Blue Devils through the whole first period. Period ended: 1-0.
Period 2
The Cougars kept the first period momentum going into the second with some
great scoring chances by #11 Nathan Ellison, #2 Kevin Heyl, #9 Jeff Adams,
and #4 Chase Johnson. #25 Alan Reese is on fire
scoring another beauty
of a wrap-around to put the Cougars up 2-0. The Blue Devils had several good
scoring chances, but were stopped cold by #20 Eric Berner. The Cougars were
able to keep the Devils off the scoreboard by great defensive plays by #47
Jordan Fragoza, #81 Zefan Hurley, and #88 Derek Green. Period ended: 2-0.
Period 3
The tables turned during the third period, with the Blue Devils picking up
the pace and putting more pressure on the Cougars in the offensive zone. They
scored their first goal early in the period. The Cougars countered with a
goal from #2 Kevin Heyl, as he blew past their defenseman to give the Cougars
a comfortable two goal lead
..but not for long. Tri-Valley came right
back with a goal to come within one. For those of us in the stands, this was
a real nail biter all the way to the end. The Cougars certainly made it interesting
and were able to hold on for the win. Game ended: 3-2.
Summary:
This was a great team effort by all. Now off to SF.
