1/3/04 - New Year proves a happy one as Cougars shut-out the Stockton Colts, 10-0

After a somewhat relaxing and exciting holiday season behind them, the Cougars came out with their biggest offensive game this season with a shut-out victory over the visiting Stockton Colts.

First Period:
Cougar goalie #30 Chris Meyer was tested early as Stockton was on the power play, but he shut them down, along with some great penalty killing by #77 Rickey Niday.  The Cougars offense dominated most of the first period with numerous scoring chances, but it wasn't until late in the period that #14 Josh Bautista put the Cougars on the board with a beautiful one-timer off a pass from #10 Alan Nguyen.  With hard work along the boards by #25 Alan Reese and #11 Nathan Ellison, the Cougars #7 Max DeLance was able to break through and score.  Period ended 2-0.

Second Period:
Shortly into the second period, the Cougars found themselves on the penalty kill once again, but turned it into a great shorthanded wrap around goal by #25 Alan Reese.  The Cougars didn't allow the Colts a shot on net during the power play…as a matter of fact; the Colts didn't register a shot on net the whole period.  Poor #30 Chris Meyers was resorting to making "snow angels" to keep himself busy! (Per some comical Colt parents.)  The Cougars dominated the rest of the second period with three more goals:  #11 Nathan Ellison scored on a beautiful backhanded goal, #9 Jeff Adams scored off a pass from #2 Kevin Heyl in front of the net, and #14 Josh Bautista scored his second of the game.  Period ended 6-0.

Third Period:
The Colts came out more physical in the third period, which provided them some breakaway opportunities, only to be denied by #30 Chris Meyer.  The Cougars never gave up, but continued to go for the puck, take shots, and play great defense.  Talk about defense, #88 Derek Green jumped up at the blue line to take the puck into the offensive zone, and score a beauty of a shorthanded goal.  #9 Jeff Adams followed that up with his second goal of the night.  #2 Kevin Heyl scored off a perfect pass from #27 Brett DeLorenzi to the front of the net.  The same line scored another goal, this time #10 Alan Nguyen from #2 Kevin Heyl.  Period ended 10-0.

Summary:
The whole game was a team effort, with each player stepping up to the task, but there are a few that deserve some recognition; #47 Jordan Fragoza for his great physical play, #64 Shoshana Levine for keeping the puck in the offensive zone, #16 Denis van de Goor, who stood up to the big guys and allowed our offense to do their job, and #81 Zefan Hurley, who was denied a goal because the ref didn't see it and for his outstanding defense play.  Great job team, now let's carry the momentum over to our next game against Tri-Valley!!!!!
