12/6/03 - Tri-Valley Blue Devils beat Cougars 4-2
Period 1
The Cougars started the game with the same intensity they had during the Anaheim
tournament. They were physical, aggressive with the puck and tenacious in
the corners. Several of the Cougars lines had great scoring chances, but the
Tri-Valley goalie came up big. Cougars were on the scoreboard first, with
a nice breakaway goal by #2 Kevin Heyl, off a great pass from #47 Jordan
Fragoza. #9 Jeff Adams, #16 Denis van de Goor, and #77 Rickey Niday played
a great first period. Cougars had several opportunities to score on the power
plays, but were unable to sneak one past the goalie.
Period 2
The Tri-Valley Blue Devils came out with a vengeance during the second period.
They scored two quick goals (within 10 seconds of each other) to take the
lead. The Cougars had some great opportunities from #27 Brett DeLorenzi,
#10 Alan Nguyen, #81 Zefan Hurley and #26 Brian Townsend. Tri-Valley would
go on to score two more goals in the period, to lead the game 4-1.
Period 3
The Cougars had a hard time getting it past the Tri-Valley goalie, but not
without trying. #11 Nathan Ellison, #7 Max DeLance, and #27 Brett DeLorenzi
had a beautiful scoring chance, only to be denied. #25 Alan Reese scored
a top-shelf beauty to cut the lead to two goals. Unfortunately, that would
be the last scoring for both the Cougars and the Blue Devils.
Summary: Although the score didn't indicate a good game by Cougars
standards, I felt the team had many positives: they made great use of the
points, the defense was able to keep the puck in the offensive zone, great
teamwork (passing), and great scoring opportunities in front of the net.
Unfortunately, the puck, penalties, and great goaltending kept the Cougars from
being victorious. We'll get them next time!!!!
