11/9/03 - Cougars come up short in 6-4 loss to the Capital Thunder

After a long drive to Roseville, the Cougars were ready to battle the Capital Thunder on their home ice.  The 1st period started with the Cougars taking a penalty, but resulted in some nice shorthanded opportunities by #9 Jeff Adams, #27 Brett DeLorenzi, and #81 Zefan Hurley.  The Thunder were unable to score on the power play, but scored shortly after it had expired.  The Cougars battled back with a nice goal from #77 Rickey Niday to #14 Josh Bautista.  The remainder of the period was a lot of end-to-end action, with each goalie facing several shots.  The Thunder scored on a deflection off a Cougar defenseman in front of the net.

Cougars picked up the momentum to start the 2nd period with scoring chances by #10 Alan Nguyen and #27 Brett DeLorenzi.  The Thunder scored two more goals early in the period to take the 4-1 lead, but the Cougars didn't give up.  (Cougars did change goalies).  Cougars scored off a beautiful give and go play from #47 Jordan Fragoza to #9 Jeff Adams, back to Fragoza for the goal.  #2 Kevin Heyl scored on the next Cougar rush off a pass from #4 Chase Johnson.  The Thunder found themselves in penalty trouble and the Cougars #10 Alan Nguyen tied the game on the power play.  The period ended on some great defensive plays by #16 Dennis van de Goor and great goaltending by #20 Eric Berner.

The Thunder scored early in the 3rd period and shifted the momentum of the game.  Cougars found themselves in penalty trouble and the Thunder took advantage on the power play to go up by two goals.  The Cougars continued their attack, but were unable to get another goal past the Thunder's goalie.

Summary: Penalties, poor clearing attempts, and too many odd man breaks summed up the Cougars third game (and first loss) of the season.  I was impressed with the fact that although they were down by three goals at one point in the game, the Cougars never gave up.  Next weeks game is against Oakland.  Go Cougars!
