Period 3
11/8/03 - Cougars remain undefeated with a 2-2 tie against the Santa Rosa
Flyers.
Period 1
The Cougars second game of the regular season started with some great offensive
chances from the starting line of #11 Nathan Ellison, #7 Max DeLance, and
#25 Alan Reese. The second line followed suit with chances from #10 Alan
Nguyen, #26 Brian Townsend, and #27 Brett DeLorenzi, but the Santa Rosa
goalie was able to keep the Cougars off the board. The Santa Rosa Flyers were
a very physical team, and the Cougars found themselves having to pick up the
checking part of the game. Cougars got great goaltending from #20 Eric Berner,
who kept the Flyers off the board until late in the period. Santa Rosa scored
on a scramble for the puck in front of the net. The Cougars came right back
and scored a goal of their own from #10 Alan Nguyen.
Period 2
The second period started out with good pressure from the Cougars forwards,
and great defensive plays at the blue line. This period proved to be just
as physical as the first and the Cougars found themselves in penalty trouble.
The Flyers scored on their fourth power play opportunity of the game. Cougars
got some great defensive play from #47 Jordan Fragoza and #88 Derek Green
at the blue line, and #20 Eric Berner, once again, came up big for his team
to keep the game close.
Period 3
Cougars started the third period with a little added jump and were able to
score a minute into the period on a beautiful pass from #77 Rickey Niday
to #14 Josh Bautista, who hammered it past the Flyers goalie. Cougars had
to kill off a 5:00 minute penalty halfway through the period but the Cougars
defense was outstanding. The period was a back and forth, pins and needles
kind of game, with both teams having several good scoring chances. Cougars
once again had some penalty trouble at the end, but were able to hold on for
the tie. (The Cougars did have a goal go in the net late in the period, but the
ref had already blown the whistle.)
Summary:
Outstanding effort from #9 Jeff Adams, both offensively and defensively.
#64 Shoshana Levine had a great game, with several shots on net from the
blue line. #10 Alan Nguyen had another outstanding game. The Cougars lines
were shuffled this week, but I thought many of the lines had great scoring
opportunities - starting to see some chemistry out there! Next game - tomorrow
in Roseville. Let's Go Cougars!
