3/14/04 - Cougars end regular season on a high note, defeating the San Jose Jr. Sharks 4-2
1st period:
The Sharks came out ready to play, the Cougars, on the other hand, needed
some time to "wake" up. The Cougars were dominated early in the
period by great passing, speed, and teamwork of the Sharks. The Sharks drew
first blood, scoring quickly. Cougars took a penalty, but were able to kill
it off with some great effort from #77 Rickey Niday. With varying line combinations,
the Cougars finally started getting things going with some great scoring chances
by #10 Alan Nguyen, #25 Alan Reese, #2 Kevin Heyl and #9 Jeff Adams. The
Cougars were able to get on the scoreboard with a goal from #4 Chase Johnson.
Ended: 1-1.
2nd period -
The Cougars didn't let up and started the period with a great goal from #10 Alan Nguyen, assisted by #77 Rickey Niday. They also got great defensive
play from #81 Zefan Hurley and #64 Shoshana Levine. #20 Eric Berner was
kept busy by the Sharks offense. The Cougars used their speed to score another
goal from #10 Alan Nguyen, assisted by #4 Chase Johnson, to take the 2-goal
lead. Ended: 3-1.
3rd period -
The Cougars were shorthanded for the beginning of the period, but were able
to keep the Sharks from scoring, thanks to some great defense from #16 Denis
van de Goor and #47 Jordan Fragoza. The Cougars took another penalty, which
resulted in a shorthanded goal by #2 Kevin Heyl (thanks to the Sharks goalie
leaving the net). The Cougars continued the pressure with scoring chances
coming from #27 Brett DeLorenzi, #9 Jeff Adams, #2 Kevin Heyl, #10 Alan
Nguyen, and #4 Chase Johnson. Sharks did score a late period goal.
Ended: 4-2.
Summary:
They may have started out slow, but the Cougars worked together to end the
regular season on a positive note. Although not every player's name is on
the scoring sheet, every player contributed to the victory. Now let's carry
this momentum into the playoffs. Go Cougars!!!!
