Bantam B Begins with a Bang!

September 6th, 2003 - The California Cougars Bantam B began the season in strong fashion with an 8-3 victory over the Stockton Colts.  Playing at home, the Cougars experienced some early game jitters.  But after #4 Chase Johnson scored 7 minutes into the first period, the Cougars started gaining confidence and began to play with more determination.

The game was very exhilarating to watch (from a Cougar standpoint), as each line seemed to feed off the success of the other lines.  The action around the Stockton goalie was relentless as the Cougars were constantly driving toward the net.  Scoring was spread around with 7 different players tallying goals.  The defense did an excellent job with all players working hard to keep the puck in the offensive zone and only allowing 22 shots on our goalies.

Stockton fought valiantly, never giving up and gave the Cougar team quite a scare when they scored with two minutes remaining in the 2nd period to bring the score to 3-1.  But the Cougars responded by scoring 15 seconds later.  Though Stockton scored two more times in the third period, the Cougars took control and never let up.

The success of the game was definitely a team effort with every player giving their all.  Even players who did not have medical clearance to play contributed by opening doors on the bench and cheering the team on.  This writer would like to recognize some players who did not show up in the scoring summary, but who contributed greatly by their stellar play.  Kevin Heyl was a constant annoyance to the Stockton defense, Dennis Van de Goor frustrated Stockton by keeping the puck in the offensive zone, and Jeff Adam for being such a team player!

Next week, the Cougars expect to be challenged again when we travel to Berkeley for a late Sunday afternoon game against the Bulldogs.  Let's go Cougars!!!
