Power Play Skill Leads Outlaws to 5-3 Win
             November 24, 2001
The Aliso Viejo Outlaws demonstrated superiority on two fronts during their convincing 5-3 victory over the Cupertino Cougars Sunday morning.  They shook off the cobwebs of a 6:00 AM start to bag three goals in the first 5:54 while Cupertino was still hitting the snooze button; and they manhandled the Cougars during their four power plays, cashing in on three of them while not allowing Cupertino more than a sniff at the puck.  On the bright side, Cupertino played much better over the final two periods and bagged three goals in the process, their highest output of the tournament. Derek Fredericks tallied an even-strength goal for the Cougars in the second period, and Devin Ernst broke loose for two power play goals in the third.

It didn't take long for this game to start off on the wrong side of the bed.  Aliso Viejo scored on the very first shift of the game after Cupertino coughed up the puck in their own zone.  The Outlaws led 1-0 at 11:26 before the first rooster had crowed.  The Outlaws had the Cougars on their heels again on the next shift and Cupertino ended up taking a penalty, which led to the second goal.  Aliso Viejo scored that goal by putting on a power play clinic, holding the puck for 48 seconds before finding a shot they liked and making the deposit.  The Outlaws made it 3-0 at 6:06 on a long-range slapshot that was assisted by a tardy Cougars line change.  Offensively, Cupertino wasn't able to muster anything significant until Ben Dines created a good scoring chance for himself during a late Cougars power play.  The shot was stopped and Dines and his teammates were unable to convert on the power play despite a second Outlaws' penalty and 27 seconds of 5-on-3 hockey.

Cupertino looked much stronger during the second period, generating several scoring chances.  Zack Hitchcock and Michelle Chee executed a nice give-and-go at 11:01 when Hitchcock passed to Chee and she immediately sent the puck back toward the net.  Hitchcock tried to stuff it into the net but the netminder was positioned perfectly for the save.  At 7:40, Jordan Yindiphol rammed a hard slapshot that banged off the post.  Defensively, Kelli Howe showed great stick work when she chased down an escaping Outlaw and swept her stick around the player to poke the puck loose preventing a sure breakaway opportunity.  At 4:18, Ashley Ocampo picked the pockets of an Outlaw and sent a pass to Nathan Zebrowski who had a bit of space but couldn't get good wood on the shot.  The hard work eventually paid off for the Cougars when Zack Hitchcock raced down the wing with the puck and sent a pass to Derek Fredericks who was moving toward the slot.  Fredericks loaded up a wrister and landed it in the upper-corner of the net, narrowing the gap to 3-1.  But it took Aliso Viejo just 1:19 to respond, and they did so by again schooling the Cougars on the power play.  The Outlaws moved the puck from player to player, finally letting loose a point blank shot and then pounding home the short rebound.  Cupertino goaltender Addison Lee prevented further damage by denying a 2-on-1 opportunity right in front of his own net at 0:56.

The Cougars continued their improved play in the final period. Ben Dines showed good puck control, moving around the net and trying to stuff the puck between the pads of the down and ready goaltender at 11:17.  But the next goal would belong to Aliso Viejo in another astounding demonstration of power play hockey.  The Outlaws played keep-away in the Cougars' defensive zone for an incredible 1:47 before working it around for a can't-miss shot at 8:37 to extend their lead to 5-1.  Cupertino could have folded up their tents and gone home right then and there, but instead the team came out and played their best hockey of the game in the final eight minutes.  At 7:42, a great lead pass from Jordan Yindiphol found Dustin Thomas on a wing, a half-step ahead of the defense.  Thomas maintained the separation and fired a shot from near the faceoff dot just wide of the blockerside post.  While Cupertino's power play might not have been out of the Aliso Viejo textbook, they did show a knack for finding the open man, and that man was Devin Ernst on two occasions down the stretch.  At 5:44, Ernst took a nice feed from Ben Dines and took a couple whacks at the puck before banging it past the goaltender to make it 5-2.  Daniel McCarthy picked up the second assist on the play.  Then, back on the power play at 0:38, and with the Cougars' goaltender pulled for the extra skater, Ernst took a perfect pass from Nathan Zebrowski who was camped behind the net and Ernst whipped it into the back of the mesh to record his second goal of the game and third of the tournament.

While the Cougars left Anaheim without any victories, it was a good time, with good food, good friends, and a great opportunity to hone the team's hockey skills against some non-league competition.  The Cougars won't have long to wait to see if the extra work pays off as they meet the second-place High Sierra Wild when they return to NORCAL action next weekend.

Lightning Strikes, Cougars Fall, 4-2
             November 23, 2001
The Cupertino Cougars continued their gradual improvement, but it wasn't enough to pull out a victory, as the Beach City Lightning rallied for a 4-2 victory Friday evening.  The Cougars tallied both of their goals in the second period to briefly take a 2-1 lead, but the Lightning connected on two power play goals to escape with the victory. James Ady and Devin Ernst notched Cupertino's goals in a game that featured much improved puck movement and transition from the Cougars.  But the Beach City power play proved to be the difference in this game and as a result, the Cougars will be looking to avoid getting swept in Anaheim when they meet Aliso Viejo at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

Neither team would score in a first period that featured some of the best play at both ends of the ice by the Cougars team this season.  The forward line of James Ady, Dustin Thomas, and Matt Hopper was aggressive the entire game starting with their very first shift.  Thomas generated two shots on his first trip into Lightning territory and Ady took a whack at a rebound that required a heads-up save by the Beach City goaltender.  The Cougars generated a great chance from Kelli Howe who made a nifty move and broke in alone at 4:00.   But Howe's shot was stopped and held by the goaltender.  The team followed that up with a flurry of activity led by Devin Ernst and Ashley Ocampo at 1:46.  Ernst had a great look from point blank range that the Lightning goaltender was able to stop.  The period ended with the teams locked in a scoreless tie.

The second period opened with the Cougars continuing their strong effort. Daniel McCarthy landed a punishing check to take out an onrushing Lightning player during a 2-on-2 rush at 9:28.  Back the other way, Zack Hitchcock took a feed from Michelle Chee and circled around the net getting the goalie to go down in anticipation of a wraparound attempt.  But Hitchcock sent a centering pass instead and had anyone been on the receiving end, they would have had an empty net to shoot at.  Cupertino picked up their first penalty of the game at 10:45, and Beach City took advantage of the opportunity, scoring on a sizzling slapshot from the point to take a 1-0 lead.  Cupertino didn't let the goal get them down; instead they rallied to score the next two goals to take their first lead of the tournament.  The first goal came from James Ady who broke in on a 2-on-1 showing great patience.  Ady moved all the way in, made a nice fake and went to his backhand for the score.  Eric Blumenthal picked up the assist on the play.  The Cougars nearly followed that up by scoring off the next faceoff, but Zack Hitchcock's shot was just wide.  Addison Lee did his part to protect the close game by making back-to-back strong saves at 4:21 and 4:14.  Cupertino then took a 2-1 lead at 3:56 on a heads-up goal by Devin Ernst. Ernst and Nathan Zebrowski started the play when they broke in on a 2-on-1.  The resulting shot was set aside but once again the Cougars' patience paid off when Ernst gathered in the loose puck, waited for the goalie to commit, and wristed it home.  Zebrowski and Ashley Ocampo recorded the helpers.  Unfortunately for the Cougars, their lead wouldn't stand up.  The Lightning tied it up just 26 seconds later on an unassisted score during a scramble in front of the net.  The Cougars had one more chance during the period when Zack Hitchcock and Jordan Yindiphol moved in on the Lightning defense, but Hitchcock's shot was stuffed and the period would end with the score even at 2-2.

A questionable interference call against the Cougars early in the final period resulted in a game-winning power play goal by the Lightning.  The Lightning were able to find the open man who made a nifty little move in front of the net for the score.  At 5:44, James Ady continued his strong game by going end-to-end and getting a decent shot on goal.  He followed that up with another shot off the next faceoff, but this one was also denied.  Beach City scored the backbreaker after Cupertino was unable to clear their zone and the defense collapsed on the puck, leaving a Lightning player uncovered in front of the net.  The Lightning found the open man and he one-timed it past the goaltender making it 4-2.  Two penalties by the Cougars down the stretch squelched any hope of a comeback and  the only additional scoring opportunity of the game came from Ashley Ocampo who was stopped on a shorthanded bid.  Addison Lee capped the game with a quick glove save at 1:01, but by that time the outcome had already been decided.

Despite having no chance to win the tournament, tomorrow's game against Aliso Viejo will be a big game for the Cougars.  Judging by their first two games, both victories, Aliso Viejo looks to be the odds-on favorite to proceed to the Championship game.  A victory by the Cougars could derail that effort and send the Cougars home with a solid boost of confidence.

Late Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Ducks
             November 23, 2001
It took awhile to get the engines going, but the Cupertino Cougars rediscovered their scoring touch by notching two goals in 1:17 late in the third period of a 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.  The Cougars' first goal, scored by Jordan Yindiphol, ended a scoreless streak that had extended to 161:51, spanning all or parts of 13 consecutive periods. That goal seemed to get the Cougars back on track, as the offense finished out the game by passing well, moving the puck well, and shooting well.  As a result, they added a second goal on a rebound score by Ashley Ocampo at the 1:44 mark.  Cupertino pressed the action down the stretch but they were unable to tally the game-tying goal.

While the Jr. Ducks jumped on the Cougars early, it could have been worse.  Addison Lee was ready at the 10:22 mark when a hard slapshot caromed off the boards back to the other side of the net to an open Duck.  Lee could have been a sitting duck had he not been ready, but he he moved across the crease to meet the shooter head-on, stuffing the rebound attempt.  At 9:10, the Ducks would connect on a textbook deflection off a blueliner slapshot to make it 1-0.  At 8:28, Matt Hopper nearly missed tying it when his backhander trickled through the goalie's pads, but he covered up in time to make the save.  Anaheim extended their lead on another nice play combined with a defensive breakdown, at 6:59.  From deep inside their own zone, a Duck's player sent a long outlet pass to center ice where one of their forwards had gotten behind the defense.  It ended up as a 2-on-0 breakaway and the Ducks converted with a late pass, one-timer shot.  Cupertino's Ashley Ocampo had a breakaway chance for the Cougars at 1:38, but her shot and a follow-up rebound attempt were both stopped.

James Ady and Ben Dines broke out on a 2-on-1 early in the second period.  Dines carried in he puck and fired a shot just wide of the net.  At 8:09, the Cougars power play was called to action and it ended up backfiring on them when the Jr. Ducks nailed home a long, shorthanded slapshot to make it 3-0.  At 5:14, The Cougars had another 2-on-1 chance, this time with Matt Hopper carrying the puck and Ady again covering the other wing.  Hopper took the shot and got it on net, but the goalie was ready and gathered in the high shot and held on.  The next time up the ice, Ben Dines went coast-to-coast, sending a backhand shot on goal that was saved.  At 1:09, Addison Lee was called upon to make two tough saves on a slapshot and follow-up rebound attempt.  On their final trip into Duck territory, Cupertino generated their third odd-man rush of the period.  This time, Derek Fredericks started the play with a nice pass to Zack Hitchcock at center ice.  Hitchcock and Fredericks sped down the ice and Hitchcock took a shot that was stopped but not held.  Fredericks barely overskated the rebound and the period came to a close with the Jr. Ducks leading 3-0.

During an early third period penalty kill, Michelle Chee, Jordan Yindiphol, and Zack Hitchcock made nice plays to help squash the man-advantage.  But as the period wound down to the half-way point, it was beginning to look like the Cougars might suffer their fourth consecutive shutout.  At 6:22, Derek Fredericks and Ben Dines took their shot at a 2-on-1.  Fredericks lifted a pass over the lone defender's stick toward Dines, but it had too much bounce in it and Dines was unable to gather it in.  At 5:23, Zack Hitchcock skated in wide and and sent a centering pass toward Nathan Zebrowski who was camped in front of the net.  Zebrowski was well defended and he was unable to get his stick on the puck. Addison Lee stopped an open breakaway after a Duck swam around the Cougars defense at 4:33.  Lee used his petented pokecheck successfully to stop the Duck from quacking.  At 3:09, the Ducks picked up a penalty and Cupertino coach Dave Guy elected to pull his goalie for the 6-on-4 advantage.  Zack Hitchcock cleanly won the ensuing faceoff in the Ducks' zone, sending the puck back to Jordan Yindiphol. Yindiphol fired a slapshot through traffic and it found the back of the net, ending more than 161 minutes of goalless frustration.  Immediately, the team began playing with more intensity and that intensity resulted on an even-strength goal at 1:44.  Dustin Thomas took the initial shot from a tough angle.  His shot resulted in a rebound that popped into the air.  When it came down, Ashley Ocampo was there to pound in the rebound, making it 3-2.  The Cougars finished strong but they were unable t to notch the equalizer, sending the team back to to their hotel hungry to get back on the ice.  They won't have long to wait, as the Cougars match up against the Beach City Lightning later today.

128:52 and Counting, Cougars Drop Opener
             November 22, 2001
For the third straight time, the Cupertino Cougars skated off the ice with a goose egg next to their name on the scoreboard.  This time it was the Desert Coyotes doing the damage, winning the opener of the 11th Annual Turkey Shoot by a 3-0 score.  The Cougars were unable to muster much offense despite nine power play opportunities.  Most of their 18 shots were from long-distance and only a handful required tough saves.  It has now been more than three full games, totaling 128:52 since the Cougars have been able to light the lamp.  Defensively, Cupertino blueliners Tarra Chibidakis, Daniel McCarthy, Eric Blumenthal, Kelli Howe, and Jordan Yindiphol were generally solid.  The d-men had one critical giveaway that the Desert Coyotes cashed in on in the first period, but otherwise their play was consistent.  The Coyotes added single goals in the second and third periods on quick shots after controlling faceoffs at the Cupertino end of the ice.

It didn't take the Coyotes long to generate the first scoring chance.  Less than one minute into the game, Cougars' goalie Addison Lee was called upon to stop a breakaway.  Lee was up to the task, rejecting the shot.  But the Coyotes wouldn't miss on their next chance.  A Cougars giveaway at their own blueline led to a 2-on-0 breakaway.  The Coyotes made it look easy, using a last-second pass to convert on the scoring chance.  Cupertino's best opportunity of the period came at 7:15 on a backhander from Michelle Chee who took passes from Ashley Ocampo and Zack Hitchcock to move into the zone.  But the shot was from a tough angle and without a lot of juice, allowing the goaltender made the easy stop.  Lee's goaltending was sharp as usual, stopping six of seven shots during the period including an excellent save after coming way out of the crease to challenge a Coyotes shooter at 7:06.

Cupertino started the second period on the power play but that was erased after they took a penalty of their own less than a minute into the period.  With the teams back at even strength, Addison Lee was called upon again to stop a breakaway.  Lee ventured far out of the net once more to challenge the onrushing skater.  This time the shooter managed to get a clean shot off through the 5-hole, but it was off-target, missing the net by about a foot.  Lee followed that up with a great kick save at 6:28.  At 4:09, Michelle Chee couldn't quite reach a centering pass directly in front of the net during another Cougars power play.  Lee made a series of spectacular saves with just under 4:00 left in the period - the first rejection on a slapshot, and then capping the onslaught with a great toe-save.  Derek Fredericks finally ended the threat by gathering in the puck and sending it out of the zone.  While the Coyotes continued to control play during the second period, it was beginning to look like the teams would begin the final period separated by a lone goal.  But with less than 5 seconds left in the period, and with the teams skating 4-on-4, the Coyotes cleanly won a critical faceoff deep in the Cougars' zone.  The Coyotes' center directed the puck cleanly to a winger who immediately moved the puck to his backhand and deposited it into the net with two ticks left on the clock.

The teams continued to skate 4-on-4 to open the third period, and Dustin Thomas, Ashley Ocampo, and Ben Dines looked strong on an early shift.  Thomas ripped off a blistering slapshot that sailed high at 11:00.  At 10:31, the Coyotes would deal the killer blow, scoring on a one-timer off another clean faceoff win in the Cougars' zone.  The teams mucked through the next several minutes with not much action other than another series of solid saves by Addison Lee at 5:05.  At 3:18, Cupertino had it's best scoring chance of the game. Ashley Ocampo and Michelle Chee moved into the Coyotes zone with speed on a 2-on-1.  Ocampo took the shot but the goaltender was positioned well to make the stop and protect his shutout.

Tournament play continues tomorrow as the Cougars take on Anaheim and Beach City.
