Scoring Punch Powers Cupertino, 5-2
            January 26, 2002
With their second straight strong offensive performance, the Cupertino Cougars appear to be gearing up for the NORCAL stretch run.  On Saturday, the Cougars defeated the Santa Clara Blackhawks by a 5-2 score thanks to a hat trick by Captain Zack Hitchcock and single goals by Ashley Ocampo and Michelle Chee.  With two strong offensive players sitting this one out, and a third sent to the sidelines early due to an ejection, the Cougars still outshot the Hawks by a 36-20 margin.  Sarsh Levine was very strong in net, stopping a number of good scoring chances along the way.

For the second straight game, Cupertino jumped to a 1-0 lead.  This time they did it quickly, connecting on their first shift.  They did so by controlling play from the drop of the puck.  Forwards Zack Hitchcock, Daniel Willenborg, and Derek Fredericks, along with d-men Daniel McCarthy and Jordan Yindiphol held the puck in the Blackhawks' zone for 53 seconds before Hitchcock scored.  McCarthy made a key play to stop the puck and hold the zone that made the score possible. McCarthy sent the puck back down the side boards, where Willenborg sent it deeper into the Hawks' zone.  At that point a Hawks defenseman picked it up and tried to send an outlet pass to his winger.  Yindiphol intercepted the outlet pass and fired a shot toward the net that ricocheted off the back boards and settled near the side of the net.  Hitchcock picked it up and made a nice little move to slip the puck through the 5-hole for the score.  At 13:19, Cupertino picked up another early-game penalty, and this one was a 5-minute major.  They nearly killed off the entire five minutes thanks to solid penalty-kill work by Fredericks, Willenborg, Dustin Thomas, and Ben Dines.  Goaltender Sarsh Levine set aside back-to-back shots at 11:15 and 11:07 to do his part.  But after killing four minutes of the penalty, Santa Clara scored to even the contest at 1-1.  As the contest continued, Levine made a strong kick-save on a redirect at 8:55, and then followed that up with a heads-up save on a solid shot from the slot.  At 6:16, Cupertino was down a skater again and this time the penalty was successfully killed thanks to solid special teams play from Willenborg, Yindiphol, and Michelle Chee.  At 3:38, Zack Hitchcock sent a backhander off the post after taking a nice pass from Thomas that would have given Cupertino the lead.  But neither team would do more damage and the period ended in a 1-1 tie.

The second period was all Cougars.  They outshot the Blackhawks 17-5 and outscored them 3-0.  Starting the period on the power play, Dustin Thomas and Jordan Yindiphol misfired on good chances.  Right after the penalty expired, Sarsh Levine rejected a 2-on-1 opportunity with a nice blocker save.  Then, at 12:14, Cupertino connected.  Daniel Willenborg cycled the puck along the boards to Nathan Zebrowski, who sent a pass in deep to Ashley OcampoOcampo came around the net and managed to bang the point-blank shot past the goaltender for the score.  Willenborg and Zebrowski picked up the assists.  Less than a minute later the Cougars made it 3-1.  Tarra Chibidakis rifled a shot toward the net that the goalie couldn't coral, and Daniel Willenborg's rebound shot glanced off the goalie to the other side of the net, where Zack Hitchcock was perfectly positioned to pick up the garbage.  The Cougars almost scored again a minute later, but Dustin Thomas' partial breakaway shot clanked off the post.  At 5:13, Levine got in the act again, stopping an open, point-blank shot from directly in front of the net.  Daniel McCarthy continued his strong defensive play, breaking up a 2-on-1 at 3:02.  While on the power play, Cupertino scored their first "Femme Trifecta" goal at 1:57.  Tarra Chibidakis again started the play with a slapshot toward the net that was partially blocked.  Ashley Ocampo outraced the defense to gain control of the deflection along the boards behind the net.  Ocampo worked around the side of the net and wristed the puck across the crease.  It deflected off Michelle Chee's skate, then off a defenseman's skate and into the goal. Chee got credit for the goal, with assists coming from fellow femmes, Ocampo and Chibidakis.  The period ended with the Cougars ahead, 4-1.

Sarsh Levine continued his solid game between the pipes, with a heads-up save at 12:29 of the third period, on a short slapshot that came off a sudden giveaway in front of the net.  But Santa Clara would score shortly after the ensuing faceoff on a one-timer.  With 12:23 left in the game, Santa Clara had plenty of time to rally for a tie or a victory.  But the Cougars played solid defense the rest of the way, holding Santa Clara to a total of 7 third period shots.  Offensively, the Cougars looked very strong on the power play, particularly during a shift with Dustin Thomas, Matt Hopper, and Ben Dines at the forward spots, joined by Jordan Yindiphol and Daniel McCarthy on "D".  But Santa Clara's goaltender made several solid stops to prevent further damage.  Levine made yet another spectacular save, this one of the diving variety at 7:54.  At 5:57, Eric Blumenthal made a nice sliding play to break up a 2-on-2 Santa Clara rush.  As the final seconds wound down, Santa Clara pulled their netminder and Blumenthal gained control of the puck and banged an empty-net attempt off the post. Dustin Thomas kept the puck in the zone by poking an outlet pass back the other way to Zack Hitchcock, who whirled around and sent a blind backhand shot into the net for his third goal of the game, and second hat trick by a Cougars player this season.

With back-to-back strong games, the Cougars eagerly await the second place Stockton Colts, who will pay a visit to San Mateo next weekend.  These two teams are very evenly matched, with Stockton winning the last game by a 2-1 score after the clubs battled to a 0-0 tie back in November.

Cougars Break Loose & Get Wild, 7-2
            January 19, 2002
From the beginning of the season, the Cupertino Cougars felt that their strength would be their depth.  The good news was that anybody on this team could score.  But the bad news turned out to be that all this depth just wasn't scoring enough.  Without a "go-to" superstar, the Cougars have to depend on everyone chipping in. On Saturday, the Cougars demonstrated what depth can mean to this Team by netting seven goals by seven different players in a convincing 7-2 victory over the High Sierra Wild.  A total of thirteen Cougars got on the scoresheet and every line contributed.  Two players netted their first goals of the season, Eric Blumenthal and Kelli Howe.  For the talented and hard-working Blumenthal, it was his first goal in travel hockey, an accomplishment that earned him plenty of high-fives in the locker room.  Blumenthal's goal set the tone for the rest of the game.  It came with 31 seconds left in the first period and it provided the Cougars with the spark that they needed to carry the team to victory. The last time the Cougars had scored first in a NORCAL game was all the way back on October 21st.  Defensively, the Cougars played their most physical game of the season and it was a key to the victory.

The game started like just about every other recent Cupertino Cougars game.  The Cougars failed to convert on an early chance and then they took a penalty in the first 3+ minutes of the game. The early scoring chance was initiated by Ian Brown, who took a big hit just before sending a nice feed inside the Wild zone to Ashley OcampoOcampo wasn't able to connect on the shot and play continued.  The High Sierra power play came at 11:31 and Cupertino killed it thanks to solid team play.  At 8:13, Cupertino picked up another penalty.  On this kill, Kelli Howe made a nice steal and then iced the puck.  Nathan Zebrowski separated a Wild player from the puck and iced it on another occasion.  Eric Blumenthal, Derek Fredericks, and Zebrowski (again) also grabbed loose pucks and sent them coast-to-coast to finish off the penalty kill.  Cupertino earned their first power play at 3:51, and when Matt Hopper drew a penalty at 3:03, the Cougars lined up 5-on-3 for 1:12.  The Cougars best chance came when Hopper fed a pass to James Ady, who circled around the net and tried to hit Dustin Thomas with cross-ice pass.  Thomas was well-defended and he wasn't able to get his stick on the puck.  In the final seconds of the second Wild penalty, Ashley Ocampo took a couple whacks at the disk from in tight, but High Sierra kept the puck out of the net and killed the penalty without any really solid scoring chances coming from the Cougars.  Cupertino continued to play spectacular defense, controlling the neutral zone and winning the battles in the corners.  As a result, High Sierra was only able to get off 3 first-period shots.  That defensive effort bought the Cougars enough time to get them on the scoreboard first.  They did so on a set play called by Dustin Thomas. Thomas cleanly won a faceoff in the Wild zone and sent the puck directly to Eric Blumenthal who was poised for the slapshot from center ice, about 10 feet inside the blueline.  The winger, Derek Fredericks, screened off two defenders, giving Blumenthal a perfect shooting lane.  Blumenthal ripped the one timer and it hit nothing but net, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead at 0:31.

Playing with a 1-0 lead for the first time in nearly three months, the Cougars came out jacked up in the second period.  But again, an early  penalty forced the Team to focus on a two-minute power play chance for the Wild.  Daniel McCarthy made two strong plays in the early part of the penalty kill, first icing the puck and then getting his body in the shooting lane to block a hard slapshot.  But the Wild regained control and forced the action deep in the Cougars zone for about 40 seconds.  Finally, Eric Blumenthal ripped the puck along the boards to get it out of the zone.  A funny bounce caromed directly to Ashley Ocampo at center ice, and she raced into the Wild zone with only one man to beat.  The defense was solid and Ocampo was only able to slide the puck toward the net as she was wrestled away from the crease.  But the shot was almost perfectly directed and it just missed catching the far post and clanking in.  Back at full strength, the Cougars turned up the gas.  During their next shift, the forward line of Dustin Thomas, James Ady, and Matt Hopper moved the puck well in the Wild zone, banging bodies every time someone tried to gather in the puck and clear the zone.  After a slapshot by Jordan Yindiphol missed, Hopper grabbed the rebound and sent a pass to Kelli HoweHowe moved in a few steps and sent a slapshot right through the legs of a Wild defenseman, past an excellent screen by Ady, and into the net.  The Cougars made it 3-0 just 2:05 later.  This goal was made possible when Ian Brown and Devin Ernst combined to win a battle for the puck along the boards. Ernst came out with the puck and fed Ashley OcampoOcampo took the puck around the back of the net and went for the wraparound.  The shot was smothered but the rebound slid along the goal line and Brown was right there to stuff it in.  Goaltender Addison Lee, who faced only 7 shots in the first two periods and 16 for the game, faced a tough one at 1:17, when Austin Sylvester sped in on a breakaway. Jordan Yindiphol took a great angle to come back and help, effectively taking away the backhand possibility.  Lee did his part, rejecting the shot to preserve the lead.  Hard work paid dividends for the Cougars when they scored their fourth goal at 0:14.  Once again it was physical play by Thomas, Hopper, and Ady working to keep the puck in the High Sierra zone.  After a failed clearing attempt by the Wild, Ady managed to get the puck out to center ice where Jordan Yindiphol ripped a howitzer past the netminder that he's probably still looking for.  The period ended with Cupertino in control with a 4-0 lead.

The question on the back (in the front?) of everyone's mind entering the third period was whether the Cougars could score more than four goals.  That thought might have slid into the background when High Sierra netted a power play goal at 11:07 to make it 4-1.  The score came with 10 seconds left on the penalty-kill on a one-timer from point-blank range, off a feed from behind the net.  Earlier in the power play, Eric Blumenthal and Daniel McCarthy had solid shifts to get the puck out of the Cougars' zone.  At 9:38, Cupertino might have had reason to think that they might not ever score five goals when McCarthy nailed a slapper that was waved off due to a player in the crease.  But Cupertino only had to wait 26 seconds more to get that elusive fifth goal.  Off a Cougars' faceoff win, Nathan Zebrowski twice wrestled to get control of the puck.  He was finally able to slide it over to Michelle Chee, who deflected the puck forward to an open Zack HitchcockHitchcock converted on a backhand to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead.  At 4:50, McCarthy continued his strong defensive game when he broke up a 2-on-1 High Sierra rush.  At 3:58, Dustin Thomas had an uncontested shot from close range that the goalie managed to save. Ashley Ocampo's rebound attempt was also stopped and the score remained 5-1.  A defensive giveaway led to High Sierra's only even strength goal of the game.  It came on a 2-on-1 rush when the trailer converted on a rebound after Addison Lee had stopped the forward skater's slapshot.  But High Sierra's score didn't slow the Cougars' party one bit.  With the same line taking the ice for the ensuing faceoff, they got the goal back.  James Ady started the play with a nice pass to defenseman Ben DinesDines took a slapshot that deflected off a screening Matt Hopper to the aforementioned James Ady who was camped out at the side of the net.  Ady cashed in to make it 6-2 at 1:37.  Cupertino added a power play goal for good measure at 0:37.  After whiffing on an open, one-timer in front of the net, Nathan Zebrowski got what every hockey player would love to have at a time like that - another chance.  Zack Hitchcock gathered in the misfire and had the puck pinned along the boards behind the net when a Wild player tried to backhand it loose and out of the zone. Michelle Chee was there to intercept the clearing attempt.  She sent the puck back to Zebrowski who was waiting in the same spot as before, and this time he didn't miss.

By virtue of their 7-2 win, the Cougars move to 5-4-3 in NORCAL play.  The team will be looking for another fast start when they meet the Santa Clara Blackhawks next weekend.  Although the Cougars have defeated the Blackhawks twice already this season, they have had to fight from behind each time to do so.

Colts Nip Cougars, 2-1 on Late Goal
            January 12, 2002
Despite playing some of their most inspired hockey of the season, the Cupertino Cougars were unable to tame the Stockton Colts, losing Saturday by a narrow 2-1 margin.  After falling behind in the second period, 1-0, the Cougars rebounded to tie the game 1-1 on a goal by Michelle Chee at 8:05 of the third period.  But a partial breakaway goal at 2:35 by the Colts was enough to allow the home team to squeak by and improve their NORCAL record to 7-2-1.  The Cougars dropped to 4-4-3 and remain in fifth place in the NORCAL race.

This game was close from start to finish.  While most of the ice time appeared to be spent at the Stockton end of the ice, Cupertino was only able to get off 14 shots compared to 27 for the Colts.  The Cougars had a number of other opportunities that they just weren't able to turn into shots on goal.  The first of those near-misses came at 13:23 when Daniel Willenborg sent a centering pass to Michelle Chee who was crashing the net.  The puck was bouncing and Chee wasn't able to connect.  Stockton went on the power play at 12:03 and the Cougars put together a solid effort to kill the penalty. Kelli Howe iced the puck early and then Zack Hitchcock's defensive pressure in the Colts' zone resulted in a giveaway that Hitchcock nearly turned into a shorthanded goal.  Ian Brown and Chee took care of the balance of the power play on the Cougars' next shift.  Stockton picked up back-to-back penalties of their own at 10:18 and 8:29, but Cupertino was unable to capitalize.  The Colts applied more offensive pressure toward the end of the period and had their best chance to score on a point blank shot that Addison Lee rejected at 0:25.

Most of the second period remained scoreless as well, despite an early power play for the Cougars, coming at 13:40.  Ben Dines had the best chance for the Cougars during the power play but his shot was denied.  At 10:25, with the teams back at even-strength, Matt Hopper sent a nice centering pass to Devin ErnstErnst got it all but the Colts goalie was positioned well for the save.  At 9:41, Cupertino picked up two penalties, the second coming on an obvious acting job by a Colts player that earned an Academy Award from the referee, who ticketed the second Cougars player into the sin bin.  With a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power play hockey coming up, the Colts were licking their chops,  Then, when the Cougars picked up another penalty 36 seconds later, Stockton was clearly in the driver's seat.  But the Cougars played exceptional shorthanded hockey and managed to get through all three penalties unscathed. Zack Hitchcock again carried the load early.  Then Addison Lee made a heads-up save on a tough backhander at 8:59.  Eric Blumenthal chipped in by wrestling away control of the puck and flinging it the length of the ice.  Lee made another great save on a good shot at 8:16, and then he followed that up with another stop at 7:59.  Devin Ernst made two strong plays to clear the zone as the Cougars killed off the last of the three successive penalties.  Cupertino's effort was nearly rewarded at 3:16 when Zack Hitchcock sent a centering pass to Derek FredericksFredericks shot the puck high into a wide-open area of the net as the goalie was going down, but the backstopper reached up and tipped the puck over the net and out of harm's way.  Then, right back the other way, the Colts added insult to injury by scoring the first goal by either team after 72:21 of scoreless play.  It came on an open one-timer that Lee got a piece of, but not enough to stop it from deflecting onto the net.  The period ended with Stockton clinging to the 1-0 lead.

Stockton had a chance to extend their lead at 11:15 on an unmolested breakaway.  The shot was fired over the net and the rebound caromed back out in front where another Colt took a whack at it.  Addison Lee was ready for the rebound attempt and he put the lid on it.  At 8:05, Cupertino evened the score thanks to a nice set-up play by Devin Ernst and a gritty effort by Michelle Chee to notch the goal.  Ernst started the play with nice stickwork to keep the puck in the Colts' zone. Ernst tipped a pass over to Chee who went straight for the net and managed to slip a shot through the goaltender.  That goal seemed to fire up the Cougars and their energy showed on the next few shifts as the Cougars proceeded to play perhaps their best hockey of the season.  Eric Blumenthal carried the puck through the neutral zone and into the Colts zone at 7:23, and then fed a nice pass to Ian Brown. Brown made a nice move and got off a clean shot that was stopped.  On the next shift, Nathan Zebrowski, Daniel Willenborg, and Zack Hitchcock cycled the puck to perfection, and that led directly to a couple of excellent scoring chances inside that the Colts somehow managed to stop.  At 4:42, Chee just missed scoring her second goal of the game when Brown sent a centering pass Chee's way that was defended before she could get her stick on it.  With the Cougars pushing the action in an effort to take home a win, they were caught pinching and it cost them them game-winning goal.  The Colts scored it on a top shelf shot that came when a 1-on-1 turned into a short, partial breakaway at 2:35.  The Colts successfully killed the rest of the clock to ice the hard-fought, 2-1 victory.

The Cougars meet another tough foe, the High Sierra Wild, next weekend.  High Sierra is currently in third place in the NORCAL standings with 14 points and a 7-4-0 record.

Cougars Fit to be Tied after Third Tie, 3-3
            January 5, 2002
For the third time in ten regular season games, the Cupertino Cougars skated off with a tie in a game they felt they should have won, this time rallying to a 3-3 deadlock with the Belmont Rangers.  Devin Ernst's power play goal at 7:13 of the third period got the Cougars even after the Rangers had taken the lead earlier in the period.  Cupertino had rallied from a first period, 1-0 deficit on the strength of back-to-back goals by Nathan Zebrowski and Derek Fredericks in a span of just ten seconds.  Zebrowski and Zack Hitchcock recorded two points each as the Cougars earned one point in the NORCAL standings, upping their regular season record to 4-3-3.

Early-game penalty troubles have plagued the Cougars all season, and in this game Belmont cashed in with a power play goal at 11:19 to take an early 1-0 lead.  The goal was notched after some strong, early penalty-kill work by Jordan Yindiphol and a nice stick save by Sarsh Levine at 11:50.  But Cupertino coughed up the puck on an errant clearing attempt and Belmont scored on a one-timer.  The Cougars nearly evened it up when Yindiphol fired a slap shot and the rebound came to a rest just inside the crease.  But Ian Brown couldn't quite reach the bait and the Rangers cleared the puck out of harm's way.  At 7:09, Daniel Willenborg sent a pass to Zack Hitchcock who was racing to the net.  Hitchcock got good wood on the one-timer, but the shot was stopped.  On Hitchcock's next turn on the ice, two faceoff wins by the lanky centerman lead to the Cougars' first two goals.  After winning a draw deep in the Rangers' zone, Hitchcock sent a shot on goal that rebounded out to Nathan Zebrowski. Zebrowski made no mistake, tucking the backhander into the net to make it 1-1.  This same line stayed on the ice for the next drop of the puck, and this time Hitchcock sent the puck to Derek Fredericks, who passed it wide to Zebrowski. Zebrowski gathered in the pass and sent it right back to Fredericks who was charging the net.  Fredericks connected on a one-timer to give Cupertino the lead, 2-1 and the Cougars had suddenly erupted for two goals in a 10-second span.  Cupertino's best chance to extend their lead came at 2:28 when Kelli Howe sent a shot toward the net that deflected back out to Matt Hopper.  But Hopper's rebound effort was smothered and the period expired with Cupertino holding on to a 2-1 lead.

After being outshot 11-5 in the first period, Belmont came out with a lot of spark in the second period.  Cougars goalie Sarsh Levine was called on twice to come up with big saves early in the period. Levine stopped a hard slapshot at 14:37 and then he rejected a one-timer at 13:21.  Cupertino went on the power play at 9:38 but Belmont's strong forechecking disrupted the Cougars' efforts to get anything going.  Levine came up with a huge save at 5:40, stopping a clear breakaway by the Rangers.  But the Rangers would even the score less than 30 seconds later on a long-range slapshot that found the back of the net.  Cupertino just missed regaining the lead at 3:33 on what could have been the Play-of-the-Game.  Dustin Thomas found a seam in the Rangers defense and he drove toward the net and then wrapped a pass behind his back and across the goal crease to a charging James AdyAdy got his stick on the pass but his backhander was just wide.  The period ended with the score knotted at 3-3.

Belmont continued to work hard, smelling an upset in the making.  Their hustle paid off when they connected on the go-ahead goal at 12:10 of the final frame.  The Rangers worked hard to break up a Cougars attempt at a clearing pass and the puck ended up on the stick of a Ranger who was camped out in the slot.  The backhander was a winner and Belmont had regained the lead, 3-2.  A sense of urgency seemed to then take hold of the Cougars, but their teamwork was spotty and as a result the Cougars missed out on several possible scoring opportunities in the latter half of the game.  But they did execute well as a team on a third period power play and the result was a crucial goal.  Ian Brown started the play by winning a faceoff and taking the puck deep into the Rangers zone.  Brown spotted Kelli Howe open at the point and he hit her with a pass.  Howe moved to a shooting lane and sent a shot toward the net that Devin Ernst deflected past the goalie for the score.  That textbook power play goal made it 3-3, and left Cupertino wanting more.  But neither team would score down the stretch despite a couple of good opportunities from both teams.  Daniel McCarthy made very strong play to take away the passing lane on a 2-on-1 at 6:20, and Sarsh Levine was left to stop the shooter, which he did with a solid save. Daniel Willenborg missed out on an opportunity for the Cougars after taking a pass from Ben Dines and sending a shot just wide.  Belmont went on the power play at 3:23, giving them a great chance for late game heroics.  But Jordan Yindiphol's end-to-end rush with the puck during the penalty kill caused Belmont to take a penalty of their own at 2:37 and the teams proceeded to skate 4-on-4.  Yindiphol sent two strong slapshots toward the net in the game's last minute but neither found the net and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Cougars travel to Stockton next weekend to faceoff against the Stockton Colts.  These two teams skated to a 0-0 tie earlier this season and this promises to be an exciting contest as both teams battle for a NORCAL playoff spot.

Hat Trick Gets Cougars Back on Track, 4-2
           December 9, 2001
Jordan Yindiphol's hat trick and a suddenly powerful power play helped end a five game winless streak in NORCAL play as the Cupertino Cougars defeated the Santa Clara Blackhawks 4-2 on Sunday.  Santa Clara jumped ahead of the Cougars in the first period as they had in their earlier match-ups this season, but once again Cupertino rallied to score four goals to earn the victory. James Ady also found the net for Cupertino, and five different Cougars recorded assists on the day, Zack Hitchcock, Matt Hopper, Dustin Thomas, Nathan Zebrowski, and Michelle Chee. Yindiphol and Daniel McCarthy were stellar defensively with both players skating during all four Cougars goals, while not allowing any Blackhawks goals during their stints on the ice.  Goaltender Addison Lee was steady in net, stopping 20 of 22 shots along the way.

The first period of this game belonged to the Blackhawks.  They outshot the visiting Cougars, 10-2 and had three power plays along the way.  A strong penalty kill and good goaltending kept the game close. Addison Lee made a nice save at 10:45 after a good fake left a Blackhawks skater alone in front of the net.  At 8:31, Lee came up strong again on a partial breakaway. The Cougars picked up a penalty on the backcheck and the Blackhawks went on their first power play. Daniel McCarthy and Jordan Yindiphol keyed the early penalty kill effort.  At 7:52, the Cougars picked up their second penalty giving the Blackhawks a 12-second, 5-on-3 advantage. Zack Hitchcock sent the puck deep into the Blackhawks zone to kill off the balance of the first penalty. Yindiphol and Michelle Chee made nice plays to ice the puck while killing off the second penalty, and Ian Brown completed the task when he iced the puck to kill off the final seconds.  But the Blackhawks would manage to get first blood with the teams skating at even strength.  While attempting to clear the zone along the boards, the puck deflected out toward the faceoff dot where a Hawks' player gathered it in and sent an open wrister on net that caught the top of Lee's glove and deflected into the net.  Cupertino picked up their third penalty of the period at 2:13 and they managed to kill this one as well, thanks to strong defensive play by Brown, Yindiphol, and Tarra Chibidakis.  The period ended with the Blackhawks ahead, 1-0.

Cupertino opened the second period with their first power play of the day.  While they didn't score this time around, they did come close at 13:42 when Dustin Thomas sent a centering pass toward the net where Matt Hopper and James Ady were camped out.  Both players took a whack at the puck but the Santa Clara netminder gathered it in for the save.   Cupertino evened it up on Jordan Yindiphol's first goal, coming at 12:22.  The score was set up by a clean faceoff win by Zack Hitchcock to Yindiphol. Yindiphol sent a snapshot in from the blueline through traffic created by Nathan Zebrowski.  The shot wasn't particularly hard, but it was partially obstructed and it landed in the perfect spot, barely inside the post, to make it 1-1.  The Blackhawks picked up another penalty at 11:10, and the Cougars nearly converted during the delayed penalty on a Ben Dines one-timer.  After the offending Hawk took a seat in the sin bin, it took the Cougars 28 seconds to cash in.  The go-ahead goal was set up by Dustin Thomas who skated hard up the middle of the ice, drew two defenders, and then sent a little backhand pass to Matt Hopper. Hopper skated towards the goal line and sent a centering pass to James Ady who whacked at it twice, scoring on the rebound.  At 8:35 the Blackhawks would pick up their third penalty of the period and the Cougars would make them pay with their best power play effort of the season.  Cupertino controlled the puck for 1:46, most of that time in the Blackhawks zone, before scoring.  After a hard slapshot by Jordan Yindiphol was saved, Nathan Zebrowski outraced then outmuscled a Hawk for the puck, sending a pass along the boards off Michelle Chee to Yindiphol. Yindiphol moved inside, found a shooting lane, and loaded up another slapshot that ended up top shelf and past the goalie to make it 3-1.  Addison Lee then snuffed a point blank shot shortly after the ensuing faceoff, stopping what would turn out to be the last scoring chance of the period..

The first scoring chance of the final period would also result in a solid, close-range save by Addison Lee.  The next scoring chance belonged to Cupertino and the result would be their fourth goal of the game.  Derek Fredericks took an outlet pass and sent it toward center ice where Ian Brown picked it up and rushed toward the net.  Brown's shot was stopped and a defenseman tried to send the rebound out of the zone.  Instead it was a perfect pass to Jordan Yindiphol who completed his hat trick by ripping a one-timer slapshot into the back of the net.  Cupertino committed their fourth and final penalty at 7:35, but strong defensive shifts by Nathan Zebrowski and Ashley Ocampo helped close out the Cougars' perfect 4-for-4 penalty-kill effort.  The Blackhawks still had a glimmer of hope when they narrowed the gap to 4-2 off a nice fake and uncontested shot at 1:41.  Lee prevented further damage or any hope for last-minute heroics with two heads-up saves at 0:23.

Cupertino will return to NORCAL action on January 5th against the Belmont Rangers after taking a few weeks off for the Holidays.  The Cougars' 4-3-2 record makes them a solid contender for one of the four NORCAL playoff spots, but the team will face stiff competition down the stretch from several other teams with their eyes set on the same goal.

Cougars Fizzle in Third, Lose to Wild
             December 1, 2001
For two periods, the Cupertino Cougars played textbook defense Saturday, limiting the High Sierra Wild to only 9 shots, while generating 16 shots of their own.  As a result, the Cougars entered the third period locked in a 1-1 tie, where one good scoring chance could spell the difference.  But it was the Wild that came out and took control in the final stanza, outshooting the home team 15-0, and netting three decisive goals on their way to a 4-1 victory.  The loss extends Cupertino's winless streak to nine games overall and five games in NORCAL play.  The Cougars' lone goal was netted in the second period by Ian Brown on a slick individual effort.  It will be a long month for the Cougars if they cannot break their winless streak in their final 2001 game next weekend against the Santa Clara Blackhawks, a team they  had to rally to defeat in the season opener.

Cupertino outshot the Wild 7-2 in the opening period of Saturday's game, controlling most of the action, though not really generating any excellent scoring chances of their own along the way.  Eric Blumenthal and Zack Hitchcock both sent shots on goal that required routine saves. Dustin Thomas might have had the best chance when he created some space for himself and sent a shot in from the circle and then followed that up with a rebound effort.  Daniel Willenborg sent a nice centering pass from the corner to Derek Fredericks who was camped out in front, but Fredericks' one-timer was blocked by the skate of a defenseman.  The Cougars picked up back-to-back penalties late in the third period, but killed them off thanks to some solid penalty kill work by Jordan Yindiphol and Eric Blumenthal. The period ended in a scoreless tie.

Goaltender Addison Lee stopped a breakaway early in the second period with an excellent poke check.  But Cupertino drew a penalty on the play and the Wild would convert on the ensuing power play.  The Wild scored when three Cougars' players went to the corner to chase the puckhandler, leaving only one defender in front of the net.  A nifty little pass found an open High Sierra skater in deep and while Lee was able to make the initial stop, the Wild converted on the rebound as the Cougars scrambled to get back in the play.  Despite the power play goal, Cupertino continued its solid play.  The Cougars again outshot the Wild in the second period, 9-7.  Kelli Howe made two good defensive stops, once tipping away a pass that might have resulted in a breakaway, and then following that up by disrupting a 2-on-2 rush.  Cupertino then tied it up at 6:03, when Ian Brown emerged from a scrum along the boards with the puck, then carried it all the way in, deking the goalie and converting on the backhander.  Solid grunt work from Daniel McCarthy along the boards helped shake the puck loose, enabling Brown to break loose.  Howe, Eric Blumenthal, and Jordan Yindiphol each followed that effort up with strong defensive shifts. Dustin Thomas then nearly gave Cupertino the lead when he controlled a faceoff deep inside of High Sierra's zone and skated in for a shot that was rejected.  The Cougars picked up their fourth and last penalty of the game at 1:51 and Michelle Chee keyed a successful penalty kill effort.  Addison Lee did his part by making a save from point-blank range.

While the Cougars had not been able to muster many good scoring chances in the first two periods, at least they made the Wild goaltender work, recording 16 shots.  In the final period, the Cougars were unable to even generate a single shot, despite even-strength hockey for all but 9 seconds of the period.  The game-winner was notched by the Wild when the Cougars again overloaded one side of the ice in an attempt to gain control of the puck.  When High Sierra emerged with the disk, a Wild player was left open in front of the net and when the pass found his stick, there was nobody home to defend the one-timer shot.  The Wild added insurance goals at 6:47 and 5:41 to account for the final difference.  The first goal was notched on a long snapshot.  The Wild followed that up 1:06 later with a nice pass off the boards around the Cougars' defenseman to a breaking High Sierra skater.  The breakaway conversion made it 4-1, and solidified High Sierra's hold on second place.
